Help recovering from old wallet.dat for an old friend.

Hey all,
I've been in the Bitcoin space since early 2012.
I have a situation that I would love to get some assistance with, I will explain the situation momentarily. Please do not message me and ask me for the wallet.dat file it's not going to happen.
TL;DR
I have an old wallet.dat file from late 2012 or early 2013 from a coin I sold to a friend. Tried to recover the coins in 2018 and failed, later found out that someone had access to the computer and could have easily stole them. Would the current Bitcoin Core be able to read an old wallet.dat file, and is there any way to easily view the balance of a 2012 wallet.dat file without having to load the entire blockchain?
In the early days of Bitcoin as many of you OG's know, the only option to securely store your coins was to use the default Bitcoin wallet in a wallet.dat file. A friend of mine was really wanted to invest in Bitcoin but didn't know how, so I sold one to him because I didn't want him to get screwed. I installed Bitcoin QT on their home laptop, had him write down the password on a piece of paper and had him put a backup of the wallet.dat file onto a USB.
Fast forward to when the price went to $20k plus, he calls me up super excited and said he wanted to sell his coin because he could use the money and I encouraged it because from my prior experience I knew the momentum was unsustainable and I had sold a few coins of my own.
Anyway, I go over to his house and we huddle around his computer. He tells me that he upgraded the hard drive in his computer and gave me his old one and I went back to my house to get an external hard drive reader. I came back, booted up his old drive and remembered that we would have to let it sync up in order to get the coins out, and on his internet that wasn't going to happen anytime soon. He gave me the hard drive and I went home and left on Bitcoin QT overnight and in the morning I was shocked to see that there were no transactions on the wallet. Quick note, he had the wallet password in a file on his documents titled "Bitcoin Wallet Password.txt". smh.
I started to panic, and I realized how bad this looked on me. I called him and told him that there were no coins on there and asked if he had his USB stick and he told me he had lost it years ago. I frantically looked through all of my old wallet files to find any transaction that could link to his address, to show that his coins were still in there. After a while I realized I had sent the coins from the now defunct btc-e.com, and had no way to check up on the coins.
I did everything in my ability to try to recover lost data from the hard drive to no avail. I asked him if anyone else has had access to his computer, and then asked him how he replaced his hard drive because I know him well enough to know he wouldn't pull apart a laptop to replace the hard drive. He told me he took it to a shop to have it replaced a few months earlier. I suspect that I'm either trying to view the wallet incorrectly or whoever replaced his hard drive snooped on his hard drive, stole the coins and replaced the wallet.dat file and generated a new one. I have to admit, I was relieved a little bit to have an explanation to coins not being there but I could imagine he thinks I may have had something to do with it. I made a few more attempts over the years whenever I was reminded of the situation to no avail.
We kind of fell out after that and haven't spoken in a while. Recently, I saw a post on his Facebook that his wife is pregnant they are having a baby, and that's why I'm here. I would love nothing more than to be able to message him and let him know that I have 11 grand waiting for him, because I'm certain the money would mean the world to him during such a stressful time.
Any help or insights would be incredibly helpful and appreciated.

Even More Satoshi-era Bitcoin Moves—What's Going on?

Even More Satoshi-era Bitcoin Moves—What's Going on?

Even More Satoshi-era Bitcoin Moves—What's Going on?
Another batch of 50 Bitcoin (BTC)—that has been lying dormant since 2010 and is worth around $570,000 today—was moved today, according to Blockchain.com.
The block explorer’s data shows that these 50 coins were first transferred to the address on November 9, 2010, as a coinbase transaction. This means the Bitcoin was a block reward received by a miner.
The wallet hadn’t received or sent any other transactions—until today. The only exception is 0.00000547 BTC that was sent to the address in late August as part of a spam-like transaction aimed at over 300 different wallets. Most likely, that was a so-called “dusting attack” primarily used by malicious actors to trace BTC movements.
Today, the coins have been transferred to three different addresses: two Bech32 (a SegWit format) and one P2SH, mainly used for multi-signature and non-native SegWit transactions.
The transfers were 30.16, 12.48 and 7.34 BTC, in size. Upon confirmation, the new wallets split the coins into 2–3 additional transactions each and sent them further down the line.
As Decrypt reported, increasingly more coins from the earliest days of Bitcoin are “waking up” lately. Since the start of October, two large caches—50 BTC ($570,000) and 1,000 BTC ($11.4 million)—were moved out of their deep slumber. Prior to that, another batch of 50 BTC was transferred in May.
Yet, not everyone thinks this is a big deal. Referring to today's movement of coins, Ingo Fiedler, co-founder of Blockchain Research Lab, told Decrypt, "Those coins were minted nearly two years after network launch. I would not consider them satoshi-era Bitcoin and do not see any significance in them moving."
It's not as though Satoshi is returning, right?

Particl Marketplace: Where Sellers Meet Buyers

Particl Marketplace: Where Sellers Meet Buyers
People had been speculating since the dawn of crypto when the world’s largest online marketplaces, the ones of the Amazon caliber like eBay, Etsy or AliExpress, and, well, Amazon itself, would start to accept cryptocurrencies. There were a slew of rumors, opinions, and theories thickly interspersed with false reports popping up here and there of Amazon and its little cousins being on the verge of embracing cryptocurrencies. On top of that, someone has actually posted a petition on change.org to add Ether to Amazon as a payment method.
by StealthEX
Long story short, that was a waste of time. High hopes fell flat, and people lost religion. But not all. As the common wisdom goes, when hope dies, action begins. This exposition describes one such effort which tries to bring to fruition the idea of a decentralized marketplace for trading goods and services. And as you might have already figured it out, with a cryptocurrency as a means of payment. So let’s welcome Particl Marketplace and see what it has to offer – and what Amazon has missed.

What is it, in simple words?

Particl Marketplace is an online marketplace where you can trade goods and services. Not a big deal, you may think. However, what distinguishes it from places like Amazon as well as cryptocurrency-enabled marketplaces is the decentralized nature of purchases on Particl. You can think of it as a variety of a decentralized cryptocurrency exchange (aka DEX) where trades are being conducted on-chain. But in case of Particl, it is goods and services that are being traded, not fiat or crypto, with deals on-chain as well, fully encrypted and decentralized.
Particl is a global peer-to-peer privacy-centered marketplace that uses an automated two-party escrow system. It is crypto-agnostic and designed to work with any cryptocurrency, creating a secure, highly-scalable environment supported by a privacy-focused blockchain-based platform. The team behind the project sees its mission in developing “a new decentralized, private and democratic economy” that is governed by the network of its users, with no central authority or middleman getting in the way.
In the project developers’ own words, Particl enables everyone to participate in a free, anonymous exchange of all kinds of goods, without paying any fee and regardless of geographical location. To be sure, you are already thinking about Silk Road and its dark fate, and that the government is going to crack down monumentally on Particl one day. Well, the outcome may vary as the payments on the platform are made using its own cryptocurrency PART, with its laser focus on privacy and anonymity. But more on this later.

How did it grow up?

The development of the Particl project started in early 2017 with the release of the white paper describing the team’s vision for the marketplace, which was shortly followed by a successful seed funding that brought in enough funds ($750,000) to support the development of the project for a year (it turned out sufficient to last for over two years).
These donations helped to establish the Particl Foundation, a non-profit Swiss organization with the goal of providing legal protection for the project to ensure its sustained development and compliance with government regulations. It receives 10% of all the staking rewards generated on the Particl network, making the project self-sustainable and free for most uses.
Unlike other such projects in the crypto arena, Particl has been using its own blockchain from day one, which happened to be July 17, 2017. It was specifically designed to be crypto agnostic by supporting and working with any cryptocurrency. Additionally, it supported the smart contract tech out of the box, giving users an ability to build all kinds of decentralized applications (dApps) that can be directly integrated into the Particl marketplace.
On May 31, 2018, the Particl Marketplace, the Holy Grail of the entire endeavor, was made available for alpha testing on the testnet of the project, which later split into development and stable branches. It went live with the mainnet release of the Particl Open Marketplace on August 12, 2019, which featured Particl Desktop 2.0.0, a client-side application providing user interface and built-in wallet functions.
On November 25, 2019, the Particl Desktop 2.3.0 client was released that enabled Bitcoin payments and marked the introduction of untraceable transactions. With the help of the new in-wallet exchange module, everyone can easily swap their bitcoins for the native PART coin. Moreover, the module allows seamless integration of third-party accountless exchange services right into the marketplace, with StealthEX being one of them.

How is it different from other marketplaces?

The common solution many P2P marketplaces implement to protect buyers and sellers from the other party failing to honor their end of the bargain is through third-party escrow, where the “third-party” in the majority of places and cases is the platform itself that the market participants must mutually trust. In short, it is a single point of failure. And the selling (pardon the pun) point of the entire Particl’s marketplace is its decentralized escrow, which is a thing entirely between the two parties engaged. No middlemen allowed here!
And these are not empty words. Particl implements the concept best known as Mutually Assured Destruction (aptly shortened as MAD), a military doctrine you are certainly familiar with, and probably even afraid of, that consists in a mutual destruction of two belligerent parties in an all-out nuclear holocaust. If you are curious, the idea stems from the game theory and has a lot to do with the Nash Equilibrium, of John Nash’s fame. In a nutshell, Particl removes the need for a trusted escrow agent by introducing MAD escrow smart contracts.
A MAD escrow contract allows to lock funds in a multi-signature address that can be released only if all the parties sign off on the transaction. So both the seller and the buyer lock in the contract an agreed amount for a specified period of time, with the buyer also depositing the payment for the items purchased. The escrowed funds are released when both parties confirm the fulfillment of the agreement. Should one party break the terms, the funds remain locked for good causing a mutual financial loss until both parties agree to sign off.
Another crucial aspect of Particl Marketplace is its end-to-end privacy. The problem with conventional marketplaces acting as an escrow agent is that the communication between the parties should be open to the agent for it to serve as an arbitrator. With Particl, it is no longer required, and all messages between the buyer and the seller are encrypted. Despite being public, only their recipient can decrypt them, which effectively makes messages untraceable.
This is also where the PART coin turns up quite handy. It enables three different privacy modes, and with the most secure mode, the Anon mode, PART transactions utilize the RingCT privacy protocol, which hides both the amount transferred and the identity of the parties transacting. Accordingly, every part of the entire Particl trading environment is thoroughly decentralized, and the full anonymity of market participants is maintained at all times, making the platform a completely trustless marketplace. Big Brother is no longer watching you.
Aside from that, you can stake PART and generate a source of passive income for yourself. Particl uses a custom Proof-of-Stake consensus protocol, allowing you to get a piece of the pie in the form of new coins created at each block according to the scheduled inflation process. The annual inflation rate is initially set to 5% and goes down 1 percentage point every year until it finally floors at 2% indefinitely. Moreover, these rates are a bare minimum as they assume that all PART coins have been staked. Otherwise, the income will be bigger and better as the same rewards are paid to fewer coins.
Additionally, your passive income through staking PART will be augmented by the fees generated through the everyday marketplace operations. Whether it is network fees collected via PART transactions or marketplace listing fees paid by the sellers, all of them contribute to the stakers’ rewards. At the end of the day, staking PART can turn into a profitable business once the Particl platform starts to attract more traffic. In simple words, the more popular the market gets, the more fees it generates, the more coins the stakers earn.
As PART is a standalone cryptocurrency, it can be used outside Particl Marketplace as well. So if you plan on using it for purposes other than eCommerce, it is traded on several exchanges, for example, HitBTC and Bittrex, with more exchanges to list PART in the future. There are native Particl wallets available for storing PART such as Particl Qt with Ledger support, Particl-cli, and Particl Copay Wallet, with the latter available for both the desktop and the mobile. There is also a third-party multicurrency Flare Wallet, enabling cold staking for Particl.
Running Particl is a collective effort, which means no operational costs and no company bagging profits from it. The marketplace buyers don’t pay any commissions other than tiny network confirmation fees, while the sellers are only charged a small listing fee to keep spam listings to a minimum. This creates a highly competitive environment, with the sellers making more profits and the buyers having access to cheaper goods and services as a result.

What’s in the pipeline?

The next major release of the Particl Marketplace should have been Particl Desktop 2.4.0, but it was later rebranded as Particl Desktop 3.0 to reflect its breakthrough nature. It is set for release in the second half of 2020 and will enable the addition of user-created markets and storefronts, effectively turning the Particl marketplace into a network of specialized markets.
And if you think about it, that makes perfect sense. Say, you have a social network account highly merited and full of karma that you want to sell, whatever your reasons might be. Then creating a dedicated market for trading such accounts privately and securely may look extremely appealing to you. Whether it is the right thing to do is another matter, of course.
Kidding aside, it is obviously not about selling or offering something that the society on the whole doesn’t approve of or frowns upon. If you are a freelancer, for example, a graphics designer or a translator, you would be certainly interested in the future freelancer markets – along with your potential employers. Put simply, birds of a feather should flock together.
To keep things in perspective, popular freelancer markets that exist today charge up to 10-20% of what you would get from your client if you negotiated directly. All in all, establishing communities across the marketplace seems to be the next logical step in the natural evolution and growth of the platform. In fact, it is a little surprising that the Particl team didn’t come up with this idea earlier.
Meanwhile, we wish Particl success and good luck in achieving their goals and aspirations.

POS & STAKING
In the last month we asked the community if they would be interested in being a part of a Community Staking Pool. After investigations into this finding security flaws in most platforms, as well as the lack of interest from members of the community we have decided to not go ahead with the Community Staking Pool. While we understand that there are members of the Mousecoin Community that are unable to stake themselves for whatever reason, and that there are a number of staking platforms that offer pool staking for MIC3 to help these people stake, we will not officially be supporting any staking platforms. We ask all Community members using these or thinking about using these to keep in mind that any MIC3 hosted on these platforms is not in their wallets, and therefore not controlled by them. Do proper investigations into any platform that you use for this as there is always the possibility of loss. We encourage all members of the Mousecoin Community to stake from their own wallet (where possible) as this helps us to secure the network. If you need help setting up your wallet, go to our Wallet Setup Guides page for step-by-step guides on setting up your Mousecoin wallet.
MOUSECOIN FAUCETS
We have updated the Mousecoin (MIC3) Faucets Page:
To make things clearer and we will be adding more faucets soon!
EXCHANGES
Last month we saw the edition of the USDT/MIC3 pair to nanu exchange. In our efforts to increase exposure of Mousecoin, we are still attempting to list on both ATAIX and Unnamed.Exhchange.
ATAIX We have risen to 18th position in the voting list on ATAIX, but we still need your votes. Remember you can vote every 24 hours for this listing, and you can share in 125,000,000 MIC3
📷
Unnamed.Exhchange The exchange listing for Unnamed.Exhchange is 0.05 BTC. For anyone unfamiliar with the exchange there are two ways that you can donate to the listing:
1. If you are already a member of, or wish to be a member of Unnamed.Exhchange (and why wouldn’t you), you can put funds towards our listing by tipping us through the trollbox (Mousecoins). If you wish to be a member of Unnamed.Exhchange, you can register here: https://www.unnamed.exchange/Login/Register
2. You can also donate to the listing fee through the following addresses: BTC – bc1qmaqzhfqcw0urva0rtgfz5qvq4rw7kdnp6j7754 LTC – ltc1qc775eeftdde2jrevnyukrd2w9853jy5gmtv6rn DOGE – DEnBpriaFnKiNeBv6Q7MVxMg5hLv5urQFg UTIP – AUTyu2JhGAaCkM3KAmeBopto2bNBchNJfE
If you would like to donate in another crypto available on Unnamed.Exhchange, we have opened up the chat on the Discord channel HERE to assist with this. Please request the address and we will provide it for you. ANY AND ALL DONATIONS ARE WELCOME!! This is a good exchange and getting a listing her should help lift the profile of MIC3.
We will be reporting balances to the discord channel https://discord.gg/cYuA8FA
COMMUNITY FUND
📷
In the last month the Community Fund has undergone a huge amount of change. We have completely moved all of our remaining balances away from 4Stake, with the MIC3 going to the Community Fund MIC3 account and the remaining crypto’s towards out listing on Unnamed.Exhchange. The Community Fund page on the website has also been updated to reflect all of the changes. It is an exciting time for the Community Fund as we have now reached a balance that will sustain itself. This is why we have introduced the Community Member payment, and are able to sustain the faucets we have on https://erex.io/freecoin/ and in the Phoneum Games. There is still more to come!

Peercoin v0.9 (Codename Strider) Released - Includes Update to PoS Reward Economics - Hard Fork is June 8th, 2020 - Upgrade Today!
NOTE: If you are new to Peercoin, check out the Peercoin Primer, a short 5 part video series covering the basic fundamentals of Peercoin.

Peercoin v0.9 Released!

We are pleased to announce that after many hard months of work, Peercoin v0.9 (Codename Strider) is complete and a hard fork is planned for Monday, June 8th, 2020 at 12:00:00 UTC. You must upgrade your wallet client before then!

Changelog:

Peercoin release v0.9.0
  • RFC-0019: PoW Block Spacing
  • RFC-0018: PoS Rewards Adjustment
  • RFC-0017: Limit Effective Coinage to One Year
  • RFC-0015: Reduce Time Drift
  • allow staking=0 command to disable minting
  • ability to filter out mint transactions in the QT wallet

Summary

While Peercoin v0.8 (Mantis) was largely about modernizing the codebase and improving the technical capabilities of the reference node software, the v0.9 (Strider) development cycle was about the economics of the Peercoin cryptocurrrency.
Both the PoW and PoS aspects of the network have been modified. Proof-of-Work changes are rather minimal; in summary target block spacing has been set to 60 minutes, rather than having dynamic PoW block spacing target. Block spacing is currently approximately 60 minutes anyway, so this may not sound like a big change, but it stops some PoW pools from trying to game the system. By making PoW more predictable, RFC-0019 brings inflationary stability to the overall system.
That change is minor when compared to the modification of the Proof-of-Stake side of the system. Some of you may have been following the discussion on RFC-0011, which was ongoing for over a year, and you may have noticed that RFC-0011 was rejected about two weeks ago and replaced with RFC-0018.
In my personal opinion, RFC-0011 is a great idea, probably the best idea thrown around here in the last couple of years, but ultimately it's too complex and we could not get consensus about it. The gist of both RFC-0011 and RFC-0018 is that the Peercoin money supply inflates at a rate of 1% on paper, but we are nowhere near that in practice.
In the old system, in order to have PoS inflation at 1%, a full 100% of all peercoins would have to start minting and solving blocks. This is simply impossible. In reality, over the last couple years Peercoin's PoS inflation has only been between 0.10% and 0.20%, which is far from the "promised" annual 1%. Due to the very rough history of this beautiful blockchain, namely the closure of btc-e, dozens of exchange hacks and closures, as well as a couple of de-listings, we are in a situation today where nearly half of the monetary supply has not been moved for over two years and we can consider those coins lost for all intents and purposes.
The basic principle of RFC-0011 was the following: the Peercoin network promises a steady inflation of 1% on monetary supply, and if you want a cut of it: mint. In essence, if only 20% of all peercoins are minting, the effective reward for active minters would be closer to 5% per year. However, the problem with this scheme is that minters would try to game the system and only mint when minting participation is low. Thus, we came up with RFC-0018, which yields similar results, but keeps the reward calculation simple and prevents gaming of the algorithm. You can read more about the change here.
Long story short, the network will reward active minters more, while keeping the overall inflation around 1%.
Accompanied with an expected inflation drop from increasing PoW hashrate, overall monetary inflation will largely remain unchanged, and will be more stable.
Other changes are minor and do not change the behavior of the network. RFC-0017 is just a consequence of RFC-11, and it stops minters from going offline for longer than a year and coming back to mint. We did not see this as fair, so the coinage counter is reset after a year now. Limiting coinage disincentivizes extremely long term periodic minting, thereby making continuous minting more attractive.

Weekly Update: First ParJar Pilot Class, Constellation partners with Chainlink, $BAT on 2gether, Pynk on BlockMAG... – 11 Oct - 17 Oct'19
Hi everyone! Here’s your week at Parachute + partners (11 Oct - 17 Oct'19):

The first ParJar Pilot Class is officially off to a roaring start with 5 amazing projects and their communities. Here’s to a great future. This was the perfect occasion to announce a ParJar Battle Royale for our ParJar Pilot partners. Blood will be spilled next week. Pow! ParJar now has almost 20k active users. It works in 400+ communities and has seen 400k+ transactions. Say what! Par4Par lottery entered stage 5 this week. The stakes are even higher. 250k $PAR in prizes. Dang! Reflecting on Vitalik Buterin’s observation, Cap says: “...we’ve done things in reverse here at Parachute - we grew an amazing community around exploring ideas and built our tech to meet what they needed”. What are your thoughts on buying houses for USD 1 each in an Italian town for building the Parachute village? Cap’s recommendation. Haha.
Andy’s Advent calendar. Each window is a 16.9 oz can of beer. Sweet!
We saw Tiproom become the 17th most active group on Telegram a few weeks back. Well, hold on to your pants because it is now the 12th most active group. Whoa! A big reason for the group’s constant buzz are the amazing trivias hosted by the TTR crew. This week was no different. Doc Victor’s Sunday medical trivia had 8 Qs, 3k $PAR each. This was a quiz with a twist. In Doc’s words: "..beware, in each question they will have to diagnose a case based on symptoms and signs that I will give them". Noice! Charlotte’s Tuesday Trivia had 10 questions with a 25k $PAR prize pool. Another trivia by Victor (not the Doc) had another 10 Q’s, 2500 $PAR each. Listened to the TTR theme yet? DJ Jose in da house with a rocking theme. Wicked! Congratulations to Mario for winning the pet contest in TTR. Sebastian made a compilation video of all the entries. Awww!
Let’s see if Cap’s guerrilla marketing at Burger Joint in NYC gets us a new Parachuter
Victor’s Friday trivia at aXpire was the usual 10 Q, 100 $AXPR per Q affair. And like always, super duper fun! If you missed news from Week 41 at aXpireverse, Joakim’s got your back. Check out his video to catch up. CEO Gary Markham travelled to India this week to prepare for the Bilr release. Click here to track the latest 20k $AXPR burn. Plus, a featured article by Hosting Advice was pretty cool. 2gether added Basic Attention Token ($BAT) support to the app this week. Let the $BAT spending begin! Use the invite code: paywithbat to get 100 $2GT free when you sign up for the app. Know of a startup that’s going to Malta Blockchain Summit? Let the XIO crew know since the team will be attending along with Uptrennd. Benjamin’s tutorial video on market cycles with the BOMB token as case study was riveting and full of useful info. This week’s Dash-walk-the-talk discussion revolved around getting unstuck as an entrepreneur. After taking inputs from the community 2 weeks back, the BOMB Board finalised on the team and way forward to manage the BOMB Instagram. For the latest update on the Birdchain app, click here. Congratulations to Bounty0x for crossing 2.5x of its funding goal on Republic with more than 2 months to go. Voyager is offering a 5% annual interest on ETHOS tokens held on their platform. Read more about it here. The news was also covered by SludgeFeed. Wendy O shared her usability experience of Voyager as well.
Bitcoin ATM in Alexis’ neighbourhood. Cool!
The McAfeeDex launched last week is off to a tremendous start. Bitcoin Cash’s Roger Ver spoke briefly on it in a news roundup video. 6 portals are live already. If you’re still wondering how to list your token on the Dex, here’s a simple guide from the man himself. Binance Chain support coming soon! SwitchDex is now trackable on DappRadar and State of the DApps. The team has set up a dedicated TG group for folks wanting to BUIDL on SwitchDex. Also, Callisto Network is slated to do a security audit of the McAfeeDex contracts. Great stuff! Peeps who missed the Fantom AMA with G.Crypto from 2 weeks back, can catch up from the transcript released this week. The latest technical update is detailed and covers all major changes in code. Uptrennd started a new video intro contest for a 2500 $1UP prize pool. Woot! Full transcript of Jeff’s interview with OmiseGo CTO Kasima from few weeks back was released this week. $1UP can now be spent in tons of retail chains thanks to a newly forged partnership with MobiePay. Last week we saw Jarau buy a laptop with his Uptrennd earnings. This week we learnt about Zubair buying a mobile phone with his $1UP earnings. Neat! The latest biweekly Dev update and weekly District update from Ditrict0x covers news such as Ethlance redesign, Meme factory NSFW filter etc.
Uptrennd continues to breach new heights on Alexa rankings every week

OST has set up a community slack to coordinate all Pepo related feedback received for the Pepo app. So join in if you want to help out! Did you know that Pepo is home to some of the most influential people in crypto? This week, we heard from Ethereum and Coinbase investor Bobby Goodlatte. The app crossed 20k P2P transactions and is now live in both app stores. The first such with micro-transactions, in-app purchases and cash-out options for crypto. Few weeks back, the Sentivate community chose to burn tokens (vs a raffle). This week, they voted on how many to burn. The $SNTVT crew sat down for a live Q&A with Bit Shaman this week. The team also wrote about possible future use-cases of the Universal Web with short story threads. Cryptoreview.xyz’s review of the project also came out this week. Constellation announced that it is joining Chainlink as a new node operator in order to stream enterprise data to Chainlink’s smart contracts. Click here for the PR release. The technical overview paper gets into details of what the partnership means for both companies. Bags Token hosted an AMA this week in their Telegram group. Hope you had an opportunity to get your doubts cleared. Community member Con built a $BAGS-centric image/gif board called bagsbook. Check it out! In a bit of a sobering news, Scroll (XD Token) ceased business operations this week.
Constellation will act as an oracle for Chainlink by streaming verified data to the network
Pynk was featured in the latest edition of the BlockMAG published by the Malta Blockchain Summit. COO Rupert Barksfield was invited by NatWest to speak on how to get traction for tech projects. Rupert’s interview by Ayo News where he explains how AI and crowd wisdom works in tandem at Pynk came out as well. Pynk Tank is Pynk's very own think tank intiative which hosts meet ups, panel discussions, podcasts with entrepreneurs, thought leaders etc. Their latest event was this week. Folks who are yet to figure out what Pynk does can read co-founder Zack Yurtsever’s article that explains it all. Following up on the Hydro Vault sneak peek from last week, check out its detailed update on the dev front. How can the Hydro platform be used to get acceleration for your fintech product? Click here to read how. Co-Founder Mike Kane travelled to the AWS Loft in NYC for the Shearman & Sterling Empire Startups Demo Day event to showcase Hydro’s fintech solutions. $HYDRO got listed on the Coinone exchange. This will be $HYDRO's first IDR fiat on-ramp. With bZx joining the Hydro dApp store this week, it now has an impressive line up of partners. Thanks to the massive community push, $HYDRO will be listed on Atomic Wallet in its next release. For a quick summary of the latest news from Hydroverse, click here. Most of these have already been covered in our updates. Silent Notary conducted the first ever speedtest of its IDL network. The team published the results and steps to optimise the code. In its current state, the network is able to execute 5-12 transactions per second. The first version of the SelfKey Corporate Wallet was launched this week. The corporate wallet will allow you to purchase digital services for your business in the future. Plus, a partnership with ChangeNOW allows easy crypto swapping from the marketplace.

And with that, we close for another week in the Parachuteverse. See you soon with another update. Cheers!

Start Here for Much Wallet WOW!

EDIT 2017-02-10: A word about Nodes

There is a discussion about nodes that came up today, where it seems I'm discouraging people from running the full QT/Core client. Yes and No. What I'm trying to make sure people understand is how things work, and that it is NOT mandatory to run a client in order to use Dogecoins (and yes, I realise that browser-based tools like coinb.in and wallet sweepers are 'clients' by strict definition).
That said, more nodes is absolutely a good thing for the network. Preferrably full nodes. How do you run a full node? Just run Core/QT and open up Port 22556 on your router so it can connect to more than 8 peers. What will it cost you? You need your machine to be on 24/7/365, you need enough storage for the full blockchain (currently about 20Gb. Bitcoin is over 120Gb) and enough bandwidth to keep it in sync and share blocks with peers. A couple of Gb a month, most likely. This is best done with a desktop on a wired broadband link. Or maybe a hosted VM in the cloud. :)

EDIT 2017-01-09: Wallets WITHOUT Clients

Since I started helping people on /BitcoinBeginners, I'm getting a lot of questions about how to use wallets without running clients or trusting third parties. So here are a couple of resources that will make that possible, and not just for Dogecoin:
Multi-Coin Wallet Generator Now supporting 129 currencies! Coinb.in Start by setting the currency, found in the gear wheel in the Broadcast tab. Dogecoin Wallet Sweeper Redeem 'paper' wallets containing up to about 100 UTXOs. Bitinfo Charts My favourite block explorer, handles a bunch of cryptos.
Using these resources, it is possible to hold, receive and spend coins in various currencies, without having to run QT or a 'lite' client. You can also download and run the pages on your own device.

EDIT 2016-11-23: SEMANTICS about MINING! :P

Even though there is already a section on mining below, it has been suggested given the huge number of posts on the subject that this needs to be made clearer. Since people get their panties in a twist over the word 'dead', lets change that...

MINING IS DEAD!

MINING DOGECOIN IS UNPROFITABLE!

Put simply, there is no way to mine Dogecoin and make a profit because of the massive hashpower provided by industrial-scale Litecoin miners. Mining Doge directly stopped being viable when our hashrate exploded with the introduction of AuxPoW. Mining with CPU's and GPU's died when ASICs were introduced. And mining with a laptop WILL kill your laptop and cost you a fortune to repair or replace. Mining Litecoin with an exchange that also mines Doge and others will earn less than the electricity consumed, and you won't recover your costs. Probably ever, but certainly not in any reasonable time.
Mining other currencies may be a thing, but that's beyond our scope here. This is /Dogecoin, not /GetRichMiningCryptos after all. If you want to mine the newest scamcoin for fun and profit, look elsewhere for advice. :/
Oh, and most important:

READ BEFORE YOU POST!

At any given time, there are half a dozen posts on the frontpage just like the one you're about to write, where the answers have already been given. Read them. Don't make people waste their time repeating themselves because you were too lazy to bother reading stuff. :P
So there I was, having a quiet Sundy arvo bludge, as you do, when 42points turned up on Facebook and asked me to write a new sticky post for /dogecoin. Why would he do this, when he should be having a bludge himself, I hear you ask? Well, seems he was doing exactly that, and wanted to fob off the work he’s too slack to do himself. ;) Ah well, being a sucker for punishment, I’ll grudgingly oblige I guess.
OK, first things first.

EDITS:

From peoplma
I was wondering if you could add just a couple things. A link to the coinomi android wallet, it's probably the best one out there. And a sentence somewhere along the lines of "if you need help with any dogecoin software you are welcome to make a post, but PLEASE include your OS, version number of the client, and any relevant transaction IDs that you are willing to share" if you can fit that in somewhere.
Also, if you want to link to Prohashing, I'm pretty sure it's the only Scrypt mining pool that will actually pay out in doge. The others I know of pay out in litecoin or bitcoin. And it's a profit switching multipool, so gives a better return than just mining ltc/doge.
And there's these two wiki articles I thought would be helpful to link /dogecoin/wiki/technical for those technically minded newbies or intermediate users who want to dig a little deeper. And maybe a link to /dogecoin/wiki/dogecoincoreguide next to the link for dogecoin core.
From pts2002
Finally a proper sticky post! Here's some other stuff you could add:
zpool.ca mining pool - You can get paid in pretty much any coin, and you can mine in multiple algos (currently mining lyra2v2 with my GPU). Doing about 500Ð/day
shapeshift.io exchange - My favourite exchange, quick and easy. No registration required!
Also, you should add some blockchain explorers!
chain.so - Support for bitcoin, litecoin and doge.
dogechain.info - Official blockchain explorer. Includes a wallet (already mentioned). Live update currently not working (?)
EDIT: Here's another thing I found!
preev.com currency value calculator - Easy way to check the value of your dogecoins (or bitcoins, or litecoins, or peercoins)!

The in-house developed Waltonchain RFID chips integrate a proprietary, genuine random number generator and an asymmetric encryption logic and hardware signature circuit, all of which are patent-protected.
The combination of self-developed RFID chips and the Waltonchain blockchain will ultimately achieve the interconnection of all things and create a genuine, believable, traceable businessmodel with totally shared data and transparent information.
Waltonchain will unfold a new era of the Value Internet of Things (VIoT).

Operation Guide For Wallet - "Vault Of Digital Assets"

Operation Guide For Wallet -

Since entering the cryptocurrency realm, the mobile apps concerning the mining, trading, market, news, message, deposit, etc. have more than doubled. Then, what is “deposit”? It is another saying of digital currency wallet, let’s take a look at the meaning and how to use it?
The wallet is the Keeper of Secret Key
Nowadays, digital assets have become the standard choice for many investors, among them, for long-term holders, wallets have become an indispensable tool for storing assets. In daily life, a wallet is a pocket-size case for holding paper money and various bank cards, while in the digital currency field, the function of the wallet is more complicated and many investors know little about it.
What’s a Crypto Wallet?
A cryptocurrency wallet is a piece of software that keeps track of the secret keys used to digitally sign cryptocurrency transactions for distributed ledgers. Because those keys are the only way to prove ownership of digital assets — and to execute transactions that transfer them or change them in some way — they are a critical piece of the cryptocurrency ecosystem.
A cryptocurrency wallet is a device, physical medium, program or service which stores the public and/or private keys and can be used to track ownership, receive or spend cryptocurrencies. It is comparable to a bank account, contains a pair of public and private cryptographic keys. A public key allows for other wallets to make payments to the wallet’s address, whereas a private key enables the spending of cryptocurrency from that address.

https://preview.redd.it/8n2i5kn0krw21.jpg?width=624&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=dfa83986d7a3c2b96c85ed516c434da90e63d57a
What are the Public Key, Private Key, and Wallet Address?
Key: Generated by a cryptographic algorithm and presented in pairs, consisting of a private key and a public key.
Private Key: A private key is a sophisticated form of cryptography that allows a user to access his or her cryptocurrency. A private key is an integral aspect of bitcoin and altcoins, and its security make up helps to protect a user from theft and unauthorized access to funds.
Public Key: A public key is a cryptographic code that allows a user to receive cryptocurrencies into his or her account. The public key is created from the private key through a complicated mathematical algorithm. However, it is near impossible to reverse the process by generating a private key from a public key.
Wallet Address: A wallet address is similar to a bank account number. It’s a unique 26–35 digit combination of letters and numbers. Each wallet automatically generates a bitcoin address. You can share this bitcoin address with others to let them know how to send coins to your wallet.
Digital Signature: A digital signature is something you can use to show that you know the private key connected to a public key, without having to reveal the actual private key. It allows non-repudiation as it means the person who sent the message had to be in possession of the private key and so, therefore, owns the Bitcoins — anyone on the network can verify the transaction as a result.

It is not difficult to find through the above diagram that there are many types of blockchain wallets. The most important criterion is whether to master the private key of digital assets. Remember that only the owner of the private key can assess the digital assets.
The private key is recommended to be kept on paper and must not lose! Don’t tell others! Because it represents the ownership of the wallet and the right to operate it. Unlike the password of the bank card, if you forgot it, you can first freeze it and then reset it with your ID card, however, in the world of blockchain, if the private key is lost, it cannot be recovered and the funds secured by it are forever lost, too.
The choice of wallet also needs to be serious. There are various wallet choices, including imToken, APPMyEtherWallet, Bitecoin-QT, BlockChain, Litecoin-QT, Ethereum Wallet, Bitpie, etc. From the perspective of security and scalability, Bitpie and imToken are the two most widely used wallets.
Where can I Download the Wallet?
  1. Ethereum Wallet: imToken (Open source wallets are the safest)
Official Website: https://token.im
Tutorial: https://token.im/support
  1. Bitcoin Wallet: Bitpie (The most powerful wallet in China)

Single-Signature Address + Multi-Signature Address Improve the Asset Security
In daily digital currency transactions, except for obtaining digital assets via OTC transactions, users can transfer digital currency in their wallet to the exchange wallet. The private key is held by the exchange, while only the public key is available to the user, the transfer of the assets is equivalent to deposit the digital assets to the third-party platform.
We can simply simulate the use of digital currency wallets.
When transfer, the recipient only needs to send the address of the wallet to the counterparty, who may transfer the digital assets to the provided address.
When trading on an exchange, users only need to transfer the digital assets to the address set by the exchange, which is the wallet, to complete the transaction. Accordingly, the exchange will transfer the digital assets to the user’s wallet address (or the wallet of other exchanges provided by the user) when the user chooses to withdraw.
From a simple point of view, the transfer and transaction of digital currency rely on the wallet, thus, the security of the wallet determines the safety of the digital currency.
From a global perspective, the exchange’s major money-losing incidents have occurred frequently, the most famous of which is the Mt.Gox incident, leading to the bankruptcy of the world’s largest exchange operator — Mt.Gox. This shows the importance of choosing the trading platform.
Eric, Technical Manager of 58COIN, once pointed out that investors may often see single-signature addresses starting with “1” (such as 1l, 1p, 1n), and multi-signature addresses starting with “3”. A multi-signature address consists of three single-signature addresses and requires two or more authorizations. For example, A, B, and C three people, if anyone of them wants to buy a thing, two or more signatures are required before the purchase. This is a way to improve security.
58COIN exchange adopts the above two methods to improve the security of the assets. If the project party wants to launch a cryptocurrency, they need to provide a complete solution, and 58COIN will only accept the investor’s assets after ensuring the safety of the project. If an exchange is still using a single-signature address, then you need to go to the exchange to see if it is safe.
In short, the choice of the wallet depends on the user’s situation. If the transaction amount is large, it is recommended to use the wallet with the private key. If the total amount of small transactions is large, you can deposit in the exchange so as to make the operations easier.

Of Wolves and Weasels - Day 189 - The State of Dogecoin

Hey all! GoodShibe... on Vacation!
Please enjoy this post by Guest Writer thistime1 and tip them well ;D)
Note: To tip them directly: +dogetipbot @thistime1 xxx doge verify
I have collected as much data as I could possibly find and contacted as many major players in the Dogecoin community as I could. I hope you all find this synthesis of information informative and worthy of discussion.
Anything that was announced in the few days before this was posted may not be included here, due to me working on this for the last 2 weeks! Sorry if I missed you.
I hope to do this again, maybe even as a quarterly report.
Please take all the information presented to you here and make your own conclusions about how important each piece of data is to YOUR view of Dogecoin.
Price
1 Doge = $0.00029 USD
Price would have to increase ~750% to be back at peak value ($0.0022/dogecoin).
COMPARED TO LITECOIN
1 LTC = $7.60 USD
Price would have to increase ~650% to be back at peak value ($48/litecoin).
Market Capitalization
7th of all digital currencies, ~$23 Million USD
Our market cap has been declining the last few months, most coin’s have. I am excited to know what our year-to-year price change will be as that is a better measure of change than the last 30 days.
For the past few days I have been trying to find a graph of the TOTAL market cap of all coins together over time.
I have a theory that not a lot of money is being put into cryptocurrencies at the moment, and the coins that go up in value are taking away value from others. What do you think?
I want to know if this is true, or if I am crazy. If that is somewhat true, there is a limit to how many coins will make it big.
I'd love to just see the total ALTCOIN market cap over time as well.
Hashrate/Halving
Hashrate = ~50GH/s
Oddly, this is about the same hashrate we had after the last halving! ASICs inbound…
I could not find what proportion of the SCRYPT hashrate we have over time, as that is the best measure of hashrate in relation to other coins.
I do have this though.
Litecoin’s hashrate is about 10 times larger than ours now.
The current block reward (recent halving) will create 90 Million Dogecoins/day or 38.7BTC at current prices.
This means that if ALL mined Dogecoins are sold every day they would only make up 3.8-7.5% off all transaction volume per day, which is around 500-1000BTC/day.
When the price stays the same, we can assume 250-500BTC of Dogecoins are bought or sold in that day. Therefore miners do not make up a large portion of the selling anymore, and they haven't for a while.
Another BIG assumption you have to make is that 38.7BTC cannot move markets. From my personally observations, the Cryptsy DOGE/BTC market controls the price of Dogecoin. I have watched the Chinese markets (BTC100, BTC38, BTER) respond to changes in price after they happen on Cryptsy. ~38BTC can have a HUGE impact on price if buy/sell walls are not there to support it.
We need more demand, but it is nice to have less pressure from miners anyways.
Liquidity is still much much higher with Litecoin though!
Transactions per Day
Dogecoin has more transactions per day Litecoin, and all other altcoins.
Sent from addresses
Dogecoin has more unique addresses sending coins per day than Litecoin, and all other altcoins.
Average Transaction Value
Average Litecoin transaction value for today was $9,380 USD.
Average Dogecoin transaction value for today was $122 USD.
Average Bitcoin transaction value for today was $3,250 USD.
http://bitinfocharts.com/comparison/transactionvalue-btc-ltc-doge.html Dogecoin is potentially being used exactly as intended. Lots of people sending small amounts of money to each other or things.
I am stunned that the AVERAGE person sending Litecoins that day, sent almost $10K.
That is 3x higher than Bitcoin. In fact, oddly, Litecoin always has a higher average transaction value than Bitcoin since the Bitcoin bubble in late 2013. Anybody know why?
We usually DO NOT have higher transaction volumes than Litecoin, but we do consistently have ~500-1000BTC/day that is transacted, putting Dogecoin in the top 5 most traded coins.
Dogecoin Address Growth
Dogecoin has also GAINED 14,653 positive addresses in the month of June, where Litecoin has LOST 33,875. (info from bitinfocharts and currency4world)
Wikipedia Statistics (http://stats.grok.se/)
Bitcoin traffic – Average ~9000 views in the last 90 days (highest 18614 views/day) – total views/90 days 819,193
Litecoin traffic – Average ~380 views in the last 90 days (highest 998 views/day) – total views/90 days 40,036
Dogecoin traffic – Average ~1200 views in the last 90 days (highest 8629 views/day) – total views/90 days 154,415
Circlejerking Statistics
Bitcoin recently surpassed 1 Yottahash, I believe we are up to almost 1 Yottajerk of circlejerking power. I am excited for a few years from now, when the QuantumJerk ASICs are released.
Every time I read someone calling /dogecoin a circlejerk I laugh, not because they are wrong, but because they are just stating the obvious.
Do you think there is someone in the corner of the room at NASA who just comments about how all they talk about is rockets and space?
If dreaming big and congratulating ourselves on our achievements is a circlejerk, then I guess it’s human to circlejerk. Every subreddit is a circlejerk, the only difference in /dogecoin is that you can get tips from circlejerking. (Is that prostitution?)
The main point of this section was to see how many times I could type circlejerk.
Foundation
The new Dogecoin Foundation is now a legal enitiy and will have a road map of working projects
Personally I would love to see someone from the Chinese Dogecoin community represented on the Foundation. They buy and sell a lot of Dogecoins Maybe just a liason position or something.
At the very least, during fundraisers, the Chinese community should be contacted to see if they want to help out!
Development
Dogecoin is the ONLY altcoin with the Core/Wallet/qt based off of Bitcoin 0.9. Dogecoin Core will be kept up to date and features from the Bitcoin Core will be adopted quickly. The devs are doing great so far, especially against coins with full-time PAID developers!
CrytoSaga
Unprecedented cryptocurrency modeling software will be written to test possible outcomes to changes in Dogecoin’s algorithm. Main candidates are PoS 2.0, Tendermint, and SIMD. To my knowledge, this has never been created before in all of cryptocurrency, and will definitely further highlight the abilities of Dogecoin’s development team.
A payment protocol is also being worked on.

The biggest new Onarbor feature announcement is ability to back and re-back works and reviews. This was the top request so we're glad to finally implement it. Coming soon will be more tailored feeds where we will allow people to follow creators that interest them (will allow TwitteFB/linkedin auth to find friends/colleagues).
What can Dogecoin do better?
Marketing
For a coin that has done some of the best marketing out there, we suck at getting major announcements across on multiple platforms.
I am hoping /dogecoin_pr will bring this up to par.
EXAMPLE:
51.54% of Dogecoin users are on Dogecoin Core 1.6.( http://bitinfocharts.com/dogecoin/)
Maybe merchants and such are not to keen on updating if it is not required, but maybe they just do not know about 1.7.
When 1.8 comes out, I would love to see a sticky thread on the subreddit, an announcement on the official Dogecoin Twitter and Facebook pages, an announcement on the front of the BitcoinTalk forum, as well as contacting cryptonews websites.
Dogecoin has a large social media presence and should be taking advantage of THAT!
Tipping
I am concerned that there are not that many external deposits made to everyone’s dogetipbot accounts. Until there are more tipping users, I fear that we may be only be tipping coins that were tipped to us in the first place. That is not the best way to build demand. I am hoping mohland has some data on this.
I strongly believe in the tipping economy and culture of Dogecoin, and personally, that is how I think we can best build demand. Until we have more tipping users, it is up to us to build that demand, and the work could pay off.
Dogecoin.com
I know you powerlemons is working on updating this, but the website is COMPLETELY MISSING a section on how to accept Dogecoin. This should be just as big as the other coloured sections!
ALSO
This should be added to the “Get Dogecoin” section at the bottom of the page.
I have tried to keep it updated as much as possible, but would love the community to notify me of any changes
COMMENTS
Josh Wise
“I have said this to a few people in the community but my two cents on this is to keep it fun, charitable, and stick to the fundamentals that made the community grow so much initially. My personal opinion (and I really have no clue what I am talking about) is that this community grew so fast because it was so much fun, anything seemed possible, everything seemed worth trying and there were not many negative undertones with anything. It seems like people are really getting wrapped up in a lot of negatives right now and that is never productive. The law of attraction will rule in the end and as long as people are positive- no matter the circumstance- the circumstance will become positive. I love this place and wish only the best for dogecoin and the community, and like I said, I have no clue as to all of the intricacies and the many moving parts past and present. Only my two cents on what I see (:
As far as upcoming projects- I am still working on some new shirts by popular demand. I would really love to either race the Dogecoin car in a few Superspeedway races next year, or try to raise money so that we can run the rear bumper all season. I am super thankful for all that has come of this and want to continue to help build the brand and awareness in any ways possible. A lot of that is really up to the community though and not me.”
Co-founder (BillyM2K aka Shibetoshi Nakamoto)
“A community that is having fun, building cool things, and coming together for great causes and fun causes alike is exceptionally more valuable than one that is trying desperately to create value by finger pointing, complaining, witch hunting, attempting to market useless features, and ultimately eating itself.”

[Social X] Architecture of A Decentralised System for Social Payment and Services

Dear fellow Reddheads:
It's been a month since the successful launch of PoSV, which marked the end of stage one of Reddcoin project. There were three main goals for stage one:
  1. fair distribution of Reddcoin to common users (tipping), miners (mining) and investors (IPCO).
  2. an innovative algorithm to secure the network and encourage ownership, participation and decentralisation (PoSV).
  3. to build out a team of super talented and trustworthy developers.
The three goals have all been achieved so it's time for us to enter stage two: the buildout of services to make Reddcoin actually useful. This is what Social X is meant for. I'm still polishing the whitepaper to make it live up to my own self-imposed high standard, but I think the time is right for me to unveil it in broad strokes. There are three main problems Social X aims to solve.

Social X: why are wallets so difficult to use?

To achieve wide adoption of Reddcoin (or any cryptocurrency) by the non-tech-savvy general public, wallets must solve the following issues:
Ever increasing blockchain size discourages users from running full-blown wallets. It takes too much time and efforts to install or repair. A common user tends to find the process frustrating or even impenetrable and is forced to either give up adoption or rely on 3rd-party service providers (e.g. exchanges, wallets using ReddAPI) to take full control of her fund. Blockchain size grows everyday and grows faster with wider adoption.
Current wallets generate private keys randomly. As a user engages in staking or normal transactions, she has to back up wallet.dat file periodically to make sure all newly generated private keys are backed up. If wallet.dat file is corrupted or lost, there is no way to recover lost fund.
Again, due to the fact that private keys are randomly generated, it's impossible for a user to share the same wallet.dat file across multiple devices (e.g. desktop, iOS, Android) and multiple platforms (e.g. Windows, Linux, Mac). Different copies of wallet.dat will get out-of-sync. A user has to manage each wallet independently, which leads to significant operational burden and risk.
It would be extremely valuable for a service provider, such as an exchange or e-commerce site, to be able to generate unique public keys to receive fund while putting the corresponding private keys in cold storage. The impact on security is significant.

Social X: why is it so hard for me to tip someone?

One essential feature of Bitcoin is pseudo-anonymity. To pay someone, you need to get hold of her impenetrable public hash key, somehow. And the hash key, i.e. the wallet address, may not be valid a moment later because the owner might have lost the corresponding private key. Ironically, this awkwardness, even backwardness, is not perceived as a disadvantage by almost all the cryptocurrencies. In fact, on the contrary, the single biggest, hottest, most wanted feature is full decentralised anonymity, which has seen the rise and fall of many cryptocurrencies and their copycats. While all the other cryptocurrencies compete with each other on this front, Reddcoin, aiming to the social currency of the digital age, moves in the opposite direction. Social lives are not possible without social identities.

Social X: why can't I use a service without giving up control?

The vast majority of 3rd-party service providers which hold fund on a user's behalf has exclusive full control of her private keys. If a service is indeed worthy, a user has no choice but to trust the 3rd party with security and integrity. It's ironic, to say the least, that cryptocurrencies which are created to remove exactly this need for blind trust in middlemen end up in a much worse position than fiat currencies due to the fact that many cryptocurrency companies are unregulated and incompetent. Then the question is: is there a way to create an ecosystem where anyone can write and provide valuable social applications in a fully decentralised fashion?

Social X: Architecture for a Decentralised System for Social Payment and Services

Social X has many components which are already being actively developed. Below I give a brief description of some of them.
  1. In the future, there will be two types of official Reddcoin wallets. QT wallet and reddcoind are full wallets required to run a full node. A second type of wallets, called thin wallets or SPV wallets will use the technology of Electrum modified and enhanced to support PoSV and staking. These wallets include mobile wallets on iOS, Android, next-generation Social Wallet on desktop and wallets inside browsers (Chrome/Firefox/Safari). I've already finished writing and started testing the reference implementation of Reddcoin Electrum server and client. Each client only needs to download 25M of data vs the current full blockchain at 660M. This is how we solve the blockchain size problem.
  2. All our official wallets, whether full or thin, will be deterministic. All private keys are generated deterministically from a long passphrase. This passphrase is all you need to remember and backup and with it you can fully recover your wallet and funds anytime anywhere. You will also be able to support multiple wallets on multiple platforms and devices and they will all be in sync. This is how we solve the portability problem.
  3. All our official wallets, whether full or thin, will be hierarchical. They will allow users to generate public keys on demand while keeping private keys in cold storage. This is how we solve the cold storage problem.
  4. I'm writing code (~30% finished) for sth we call Reddcoin Social ID (Redd-ID):
    • It's a new service provided at the blockchain level.
    • It allow users to associate a username with one private key.
    • The user can choose to bundle extra information such as email, address and avatar.
    • The information is public and embedded in the blockchain. As a result, any user can send Reddcoin to another by simply specifying the recipient's Redd-ID.
    • Redd-ID registration costs Reddcoins. The costs vary depending on many factors such as the length of the username. For example, we expect popular names like tom to cost at least 7 figure.
    • Redd-ID registration is verified in PoSV blocks. Therefore all active Reddcoin stakers will be the provider of Redd-ID service.
    • Redd-ID registration fee goes to the Reddhead who successfully mints the PoSV block that verifies and confirms the registration. In a sense, it will feel like a lottery. And this is why this service doesn't make sense for any PoW coin where each block is pool-mined.
    • Redd-IDs can be transferred to new addresses and by default auto-expire annually and can be renewed.
    • Small Reddcoin holders, as long as they keep staking, may double, triple or 10x their existing holdings just by receiving registration fees.
    • Businesses and organisations can register usernames for purposes like receiving donation.
  5. There will be several services available to provide more ways for Redd-ID to be used on Internet. I don't want to disclose all our cards here. Please wait for my whitepaper and see what we have for you as surprises. Meanwhile, do share with us how you imagine Redd-ID can be used.
  6. Different components of Social X will allow decentralised tipping across all social networks. In our next-generation social tipping platform, there will be no tipbots! When you tip someone on Reddit, Twitter, Twitch, Youtube or Facebook, the tipping goes straight from local wallet, whether on your mobile or desktop to the recipient.
  7. There will be APIs to allow 3rd parties to write and offer decentralised social applications.

Social X: where are we now?

  1. I'm finishing the whitepaper in coming weeks (while writing a lot of code). The whitepaper will contains much more information than this post.
  2. Reddcoin Electrum wallets for iOS and Android are being actively developed.
  3. Reddcoin full wallets (QT/reddcoind) are already hierarchical deterministic in the development branch and are being internally tested.
  4. The Social Tipping Platform is being actively developed.
  5. I need volunteers to host and test Reddcoin Electrum server and clients. I'll make a separate post next week.

Epilogue

Below I'll only answer questions selectively. Much more details will be available in the whitepaper and there is no reason to jump the gun and repeat it here. Stage one took us 6 months. We expect stage two to take 6 months also. It may be the most exciting period in the history of Reddcoin project.
